Father of the Groom Rehearsal Dinner Speech (Heartfelt, 3 Minutes)

Father of the groom hosting the rehearsal dinner, giving the bride's family a real welcome before he gets to his son

Given by Teodoro, the father of the groom, for Florian and Esperanza. The names are made up.

The speech

Good evening, everyone. I'm Teodoro, Florian's father. Rosamund and I are so glad you're here, and we're glad you found the place, since the sign out front has said "Grand Opening" since 2011.

Yolanda and Ingram. We met you two Augusts ago at your house in Tucson, when Ingram spent an afternoon teaching me to grill and was patient about the results. Thank you for Esperanza. Thank you for the way you folded our son into your family, Sunday phone calls and all. Tomorrow is your night as much as ours, and we're proud to be at the same table.

Now, Florian. The June he was nine, he played catcher for the Pembrook Cardinals, and on the last Saturday of the season they were down eleven to nothing in the fourth inning. The pitcher was a kid named Dashiell, who is here tonight at table six, who was crying so hard he couldn't see the plate. Every parent in the bleachers was looking at the coach. Florian called time, walked out to the mound in all that gear, and just stood there with him. I don't know what he said. He's never told me. But Dashiell wiped his face, threw the next pitch for a strike, and they lost eleven to two. Florian came off that field like they'd won.

That's Florian. He walks out to the mound. He did it for his sister the year she was fifteen and the whole house had gone quiet. He did it for Dashiell again in college, and for about half the people in this room, who could each tell you a version of this story. What he has never done is ask anyone to do it for him. Son, I'm proud of you. I've said it before. I'm saying it into a microphone so it counts.

Esperanza. Two winters ago, when Florian's grant fell through, I called him every day for a week and got "I'm fine" every time. Then Rosamund and I drove down on a Sunday and found the two of you on the kitchen floor with a pizza box and a legal pad, and he was talking. Really talking. You had walked out to the mound. Nobody had ever done that for him, and he let you, which is the part that told me everything. You're family. You have been since that Sunday.

We'll let you get to dessert. Please raise your glasses. To Florian and Esperanza. May the walk out to the mound always be a short one.

Why it works: The other family gets named and thanked first. One story from a ballfield shows who the son is, and the bride gets the same story turned around, which is the only proof a father needs.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The father of the groom speech guide walks through each part.
