Best Man Speech Worksheet

3 to 5 minutes

390 to 650 words

  1. 1. Who you are. Your name and how you know him, in one sentence.

Add one small detail only you would know.

  2. 2. The one story. Where were you, what happened, and what does it show about him?

One story, not three. It should end with him looking good.

  3. 3. What changed. What is different about him since his partner came along?

Something you have actually seen. A habit, a phone call, a Friday off.

  4. 4. To the partner. Turn to them. Their name, one specific thing, and a welcome.

This is the part the couple remembers. Never cut it.

  5. 5. The toast. Both names, glasses up. Can a detail from your story come back here?

Nothing after the toast. Sit down.

Skip

  • Exes, the bachelor or bachelorette party, drinking
  • Inside jokes the room needs a backstory for
  • “For those who don’t know me” and “I’ll keep this short”
  • Jokes about marriage as a trap, or him punching above his weight

Before the day

  • Read it out loud, standing up, with a timer. Twice.
  • Check every name and how to say it.
  • Put it on cards in large print. Keep your phone in your pocket.

Fill It In Before You Write It

A blank page is hard because it asks for everything at once. The worksheet asks for one thing per box: who you are, one story, what changed, a word to the partner, a toast. Answer each in a sentence or two. When every box has something true in it, the speech is mostly written, and it already has the right shape.

Then write it out in that order, read it aloud with a timer, and cut until it fits the time at the top of the sheet. The free speech length calculator does the arithmetic if you type the draft in, and the free speech check tells you which part lands and which part to cut.

Stuck on the first box? The opening lines generator gives you five first lines for your role. Want to see the shape filled in? There are full example speeches for every role, and fill-in-the-blank templates if you prefer to start from one.

Questions

How do I use a wedding speech worksheet?

Print it, or save it as a PDF, and fill in each box in a sentence or two. Do not write the speech yet. Once every box has something true in it, write the speech in that order, read it out loud with a timer, and cut whatever pushes it past the time at the top of the page.

Is the worksheet free?

Yes. There is no signup and nothing to buy. Print as many as you like, for every speaker in the wedding party.

Which worksheet should I use?

Pick the one for your role. The best man and maid of honor sheets have room for one story. The parent sheet starts with a welcome, because parents usually host. The couple's sheet is built around thank-yous. The toast sheet is for a friend, a sibling, or anyone asked to say a minute's worth.

How long should my speech be when it's written?

The time at the top of each sheet: three to five minutes for the best man and maid of honor, three to four for a parent, two to three for the couple, and one to two for a toast. At a wedding pace of about 130 words a minute, that is roughly the word count shown next to it.
