Short Wedding Vows for Him (Under a Minute)
A bride marrying a quiet man who does kind things without saying so wants short vows that let him know she saw every one of them
Said by Rhea, to Galen. The names are made up.
The vows
Galen, every morning this winter you went out at six and scraped the ice off my car before you did yours. You never mentioned it. I found out in February because the neighbor did.
That's you. You do the cold part first and don't tell anybody.
So I promise to notice. I'll make your coffee the way you actually like it, the way that's too sweet for anyone else. I will stop borrowing your good gloves, or at least give them back. When you go quiet after a hard day, I'll sit with you and wait.
And next winter, I'm setting my alarm for five forty-five.
You'll find your car already done.
Why it works: One small habit tells the whole room who he is, and she only finds out about it secondhand, which makes it more touching. The promises stay small and domestic. The ending flips the habit around so she's the one up early, and the last line says it without saying love.
Make them yours
Borrow the shape, not the sentences. These open on one real moment, say one thing about the partner nobody else sees, make a handful of promises (mostly small ones), and come back to the opening detail at the end. Put your own moment, your own habit and your own promises in each slot. The guide to writing vows walks through each part.
Write yours, or check them
The vow writer starts from your own answers. The vows check times your draft and flags the lines every couple uses, without sending it anywhere.
