Mother of the Bride Speech, Hosting Alone (Heartfelt, 3.5 Minutes)

A mother who raised her daughter alone is hosting alone, and uses one week from 2008 to show who her daughter is and to welcome the man who noticed the screen door

Given by Xiomara, the mother of the bride, for Leontine and Tancredi. The names are made up.

The speech

Good evening, everyone. I'm Xiomara, Leontine's mother. It's just me up here tonight, which is how it has been in our house since Leontine was four, and I want to say up front that we did fine. Better than fine. Look at her.

Welcome, all of you. Thank you for being here, and thank you to the ones who drove through that rain this afternoon. Tancredi's parents, Romilly and Valentin, have been nothing but kind to us from the first dinner on, and I'm grateful.

I want to tell you about the week I had the flu.

February of 2008. Leontine was ten. I was working two jobs then, the office in the day and the restaurant on weekends, and I got sick in the way where you cannot get out of bed, and I did not have anyone to call. I remember lying there on the Tuesday doing math about how many days I could miss.

On Wednesday morning I came out to the kitchen and there was a piece of paper on the fridge, held up with the pizza magnet, in purple marker. It said "Mom's Day" across the top. Eight, toast. Ten, nap. Noon, soup. Two o'clock just said "rest," underlined. She had packed her own lunch. She had also, I found out from the school on Friday, written a note excusing herself for being late, which said, and I'm quoting, "My mother needs soup." She signed my name. She spelled it right.

I kept that piece of paper. It's in my bag tonight.

That's who she is. She looks at what's in front of her, figures out what needs doing, and does it before anyone can tell her not to. She has done it her whole life. For me, more times than she knows I noticed. For her friends. For a few of you in this room.

For a long time I worried about who would do it for her. Then she brought Tancredi to the house.

Tancredi, the first time you came for dinner, you noticed the screen door didn't latch. You didn't say anything. The second time, you brought a latch. I have had a lot of people through that door in twenty-two years and you are the first one who fixed it. I noticed. I notice everything. It's where she gets it.

You see what she needs before she says it, and she lets you, which is the part that surprised me. You're not a guest in our family. You're the reason I set the table for three now. Thank you for her.

Leontine. Mom's Day was the best day I ever had sick. Today is the best day I ever had, period.

Everybody, please stand and raise your glasses. To Leontine and Tancredi. Whatever needs doing, do it for each other.

Why it works: Being the only parent is stated once and never apologized for. The fridge schedule is a detail only a mother would have, the latch is a detail only she would have noticed, and the toast ties the two together.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The mother of the bride speech guide walks through each part.
