Best Man Speech for a Twin Brother (Funny, About 3.5 Minutes)

The groom's identical twin is best man; the mix-up jokes run out and lead to the bride, who has never once gotten them wrong

Given by Fenn, the best man, for Marek and Ilse. The names are made up.

The speech

Hi, everyone. I'm Fenn, Marek's twin brother. If you congratulated me during cocktail hour, thank you. I accepted on his behalf. And to the woman by the bar who asked about the honeymoon, I told you Portugal. I have no idea where they're going. Please don't send a postcard.

We're identical, so let me get the confusion out of the way. Until we were twelve, our mom sewed our initials inside our jackets, an M and an F in red thread, because even she needed a cheat sheet before school. It didn't help much. In fourth grade we swapped classes for a whole day. I sat through his spelling test. He sat through my fractions quiz. He got an 88 on my quiz and I got a 54 on his spelling. We were caught at two in the afternoon, when Marek asked to go to the nurse and signed the hall pass with his own name. He has never been able to lie on paper. It's one of his best qualities, and it cost us both a week of recess.

That's been our life. People wave at the wrong one. Waiters bring his order to me. At his office party two years ago, his boss talked to me for twenty minutes about a spreadsheet, and I nodded the whole time, and I think I approved a budget. Marek always laughed it off. He was the easygoing twin. He let people guess.

Then he met Ilse.

Our thirty-first birthday was last spring, and our mom, who has learned nothing, bought us the same green sweater. We both wore it to the bowling alley, out of respect. Ilse came in late, straight from a shift, and the two of us were standing at the shoe counter with our backs to the door. Same sweater, same haircut, same terrible rental shoes. She walked right up and put her hand on Marek's shoulder. Didn't slow down. Didn't check.

Later I asked her how she knew. She said, "He's the one who keeps looking at the door."

I thought about that the whole third game. I bowled a 71. She was right. For thirty-one years I have been half of a pair, and I've been glad to be. But I have never seen my brother wait for anybody the way he waits for her. He watches the door at restaurants. He watches it at our parents' house. He stands up a little before she comes in, like he can hear her car in the driveway.

Ilse, thank you for never needing the cheat sheet. You found the one of us who was looking for you, and you got it right on the first try, which is better than our teachers ever did.

Everybody, glasses up. To Marek and Ilse. No initials required.

Why it works: The twin confusion is the setup, not the point. Every laugh about people guessing wrong makes the moment the bride gets it right land harder, and the toast calls back to the initials sewn in their jackets.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The how to write a best man speech walks through each part.
