Best Man Speech for an Older Brother (Short, About 2.5 Minutes)

Younger brother as best man for his older brother; one childhood memory does all the work

Given by Benedict, the best man, for Stellan and Ottilie. The names are made up.

The speech

Hi, everyone. I'm Benedict, Stellan's little brother, and I have been following him around since 1998. He is the only person in this room who has never once told me to stop.

One memory, and then I will let you eat.

When I was nine and Stellan was fourteen, our mom started working nights, and somebody had to get me across town to swim practice. The number 12 bus, two transfers, forty minutes each way. Stellan rode it with me three times. He showed me where to stand, which driver was friendly, how to count the stops. On the fourth day he said, "You've got it," handed me the fare, and waved from the porch. I was so proud of myself I did not even look out the window.

It was about a month before I noticed the kid in the gray hood, two rows back, every single trip. He had been on the bus the whole time. He never sat next to me. He never said a word. He just made sure I got there, and let me think I had done it myself.

That is my brother. He will go to a lot of trouble to let you feel like you did it on your own.

Then he met Ottilie, and something changed that I had been waiting a long time to see. I came by their apartment last winter and she was teaching him to make our grandmother's soup, from a recipe she had called our aunt to get. And he was standing there at the stove, letting someone else figure it out. Letting someone look after him. In twenty-six years I had never watched that happen.

Ottilie, he has sat two rows back for everyone he loves, his entire life. Thank you for being the one who made him come sit up front.

Everybody, glasses up. To Stellan and Ottilie. Two rows back, no more.

Why it works: It trusts a single memory instead of a highlight reel, the laugh is gentle, and the toast is four words long.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The how to write a best man speech walks through each part.
