The speech
Hi, everyone. I'm Nils, Ike's older brother. I'm told it's traditional for the best man to embarrass the groom. I've had twenty-nine years to collect material, and I'm going to waste almost all of it.
When I was fifteen I had a paper route. Ninety-two houses, seven days a week, out the door at 5:15. Ike was ten, and he decided he was my partner. Nobody asked him. He just started setting his alarm. He'd sit on the garage floor in his pajamas with a box of rubber bands, folding papers while I loaded the bike, and he talked the entire time. Mostly about which dogs on the route he thought were secretly nice.
That November I broke my wrist in gym class. Six weeks in a cast. I told my mom I'd have to give up the route, and I went to bed feeling sorry for myself.
The next morning I woke up at seven and the papers were gone.
Ike did the route by himself for six weeks. Ninety-two houses in the dark, on a bike that was too big for him, so he walked it up every hill. He never missed a porch. He also learned which dogs were not secretly nice. When my cast came off, he handed me an envelope with every dollar from those six weeks in it. On the front, in his ten-year-old handwriting, he'd written one word: "Yours."
I tried to give it back. He wouldn't take it. I still have the envelope.
That's my brother. He does the hard part quietly and then hands you the credit like it was yours all along.
Which is why I used to worry about him a little. A person who's always doing the work for everyone else doesn't always notice when nobody's doing it for him.
Then he brought Calliope home.
Last Christmas, after dinner, Ike did what he always does. He disappeared into the kitchen to wash every pot in my mother's house by himself. He's done it since he was twelve. Nobody really thinks about it anymore. But when I went in for a glass of water, Calliope was already in there. She had a dish towel over her shoulder and the radio on, and she'd turned the counter into a system. Washed on the left, dried on the right. She looked at me and said, "You can put things away, or you can leave." I put things away.
In seventeen years of Christmas dinners, that was the first time I'd seen anybody walk into that kitchen without being asked.
Calliope, you noticed the part of him the rest of us got used to. Thank you for picking up the towel.
Will everyone please raise a glass. To Ike and Calliope. Washed on the left, dried on the right, and all of it yours.
Why it works: The paper route shows the groom's character at ten years old, and the bride earns her place by doing the one thing nobody in the family ever thought to do.
Make It Yours
Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The how to write a best man speech walks through each part.
