Best Woman Speech From the Groom's Sister (Heartfelt, 3 Minutes)

The groom's older sister stands up as his best woman; he is a quiet man who shows love in small, repeated ways

Given by Wilda, the best woman, for Ivo and Alessia. The names are made up.

The speech

Hi, everyone. I'm Wilda, Ivo's big sister. When he asked me to be his best woman, I said yes before he finished the sentence, which he will tell you is a habit of mine.

I'm five years older, so for a lot of his childhood I was in charge when our parents worked late. I made a great deal of boxed macaroni. I ruled with what he called "an iron spoon." He was a quiet kid. He watched everything and didn't say much about it.

When I left for college, he was thirteen. I figured he'd be glad to finally have the bathroom to himself. The first Sunday I was gone, a letter showed up in my campus mailbox. One sheet of notebook paper. At the top it said "Weather: rain." Under that was a drawing of our dog, asleep on my bed. And at the bottom, one line: "He misses you. The dog, I mean."

That letter came every Sunday for four years. Weather, dog, one line. He never once wrote that he missed me himself. He didn't have to. I kept every one of them in a shoebox, and that shoebox is in my closet right now. I counted them last week. There are a hundred and ninety-one. I cried in a way I would rather not describe in front of his new in-laws.

My brother has never been a big talker. He shows up in small, steady ways, over and over, until one day you look up and realize he's been holding up part of your life the whole time.

That brings me to Alessia.

A month ago I stayed with them for a weekend. On Saturday I got up early to make coffee, and there was a sticky note on the coffee maker in Ivo's handwriting. It said, "Weather: sunny, 61. Blue jacket anyway." Underneath was a drawing of Alessia holding a mug, very badly drawn. Then I looked at the fridge. There were about thirty more.

Alessia told me he has left one every morning since they moved in together, even on the days he's out the door before it's light.

So Alessia, I want you to know what you have. The notes are the loudest way he knows how to say it. I got four years of Sundays. You get every morning. I'm so glad it's you.

Everybody, please raise your glasses. To Ivo and Alessia. Weather: clear, for a very long time.

Why it works: The college letters set up a habit, and the sticky notes show the habit has a new address. The bride gets the payoff without a single line of gushing.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The how to write a best man speech walks through each part.
