Father of the Bride Speech for a Quiet Dad (Heartfelt, 3.5 Minutes)

A quiet father who leaves the talking to his wife is speaking because his daughter asked, and uses one drive to say what he never has

Given by Wilhelm, the father of the bride, for Sabine and Tancredi. The names are made up.

The speech

Good evening. I'm Wilhelm, Sabine's father. Most of you know I don't say much. Ulyana does the talking in our house, and she does it well, so I've never needed to. Tonight I'm going to say a little more than usual. Sabine asked. That's the whole reason.

Welcome, all of you. Thank you for coming, some of you a very long way. Tancredi's family drove in from three states over, and I'm told the car was full of food the whole way, which sounds about right.

I have one story.

In August of 2016 I drove Sabine to college. Eleven hours. Ulyana couldn't come, so it was the two of us, the car packed to the roof, a lamp in the back seat wedged between a laundry basket and a box of books. Sabine talked for the first four hours. About the roommate she hadn't met, the classes, the town, what she was worried about, what she wasn't. I listened. That's what I'm for.

Somewhere past the state line she stopped. Nothing was wrong. She just ran out, and we drove. An hour went by with nothing but the road and the radio turned low. And then, outside a gas station in Iowa where I was checking the straps on the roof, she said, "This is nice."

I didn't say anything. I'm not sure I could have. But I thought about it for the rest of the drive, and most of the drive home alone, and I'll tell you what I decided. I had spent eighteen years worried that I hadn't given her enough, because I'm not a talker, and her mother gave her so much. And what she had told me, at that gas station, was that she had learned something from me after all. She knew how to be quiet with somebody. She knew that quiet could be a good thing between two people, and not a gap.

That's what I'd want you to know about her. She can fill a room, and she does. She also knows when not to.

So, Tancredi. The first time you came to the house, Sabine took her mother inside to help with dinner, and you and I sat on the porch for forty minutes. We said maybe nine words between us. Afterward Sabine asked you what we talked about, and you said, "Nothing. It was great." She told me that later. She was so pleased. I was too.

I've watched you two since, and I've seen a lot of talking and a lot of laughing, and a lot of evenings where neither of you says a thing and both of you are happy. That's rare. I know, because I married it. Welcome to the family. You already fit.

Sabine, I'm proud of you. I don't say it. I'm saying it.

Please stand with me and raise a glass. To Sabine and Tancredi. May you always have someone who's happy to say nothing with you.

Why it works: The speaker's silence is the subject, not an apology. One drive carries the story, the groom's porch visit answers it, and the toast is the same idea in one line.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The father of the bride speech guide walks through each part.
