Wedding Vows to Stepchildren (2 Minutes)

Yannick is marrying a mom with a nine-year-old son, and he wanted to promise the boy something real without acting like he's replacing his dad

Said by Yannick, to Kalani. The names are made up.

The vows

Kalani, the first time I came to your place, Quinn walked me through the rock collection on the windowsill. Every single rock. There were forty-one. Each one had a story, and most of the stories took place in a parking lot.

I passed some kind of test, I think, because three weeks later Quinn handed me a flat gray one from the lake and said I could keep it. It's in my jacket pocket right now.

You raised a kid who gives rocks to the people he's decided to trust. That tells me a lot about you. You're careful with him, and you let him be generous anyway.

So here's what I promise you. I'll take the Tuesday soccer drop-off. I'll learn which cereal is the right cereal, and which one is "the gross one." When the house is loud and you need ten minutes alone in the car, I'll give you twenty.

I will never make you pick between him and me. There's no contest, and I wouldn't want one.

Quinn, this part is for you. You already have a mom and a dad who love you a lot. I'm not here to take anybody's spot. I just want to be one more person on your side. I promise to come to your games. I promise to look at every new rock you find, even the parking lot ones. And if you ever need to talk, I'll listen first and talk second.

Kalani, I've still got that rock. I don't plan on ever taking it out of my pocket.

Why it works: The rock is something Quinn chose to give, so it proves the trust without Yannick having to claim it. The part spoken to Quinn is in plain words a nine-year-old would follow, and it says early that nobody is being replaced. The ending puts the rock back in his pocket, which ties the kid's gift to the marriage.

Make them yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. These open on one real moment, say one thing about the partner nobody else sees, make a handful of promises (mostly small ones), and come back to the opening detail at the end. Put your own moment, your own habit and your own promises in each slot. The guide to writing vows walks through each part.

Write yours, or check them

The vow writer starts from your own answers. The vows check times your draft and flags the lines every couple uses, without sending it anywhere.
