Wedding Vows for Later in Life (1.5 Minutes)

Gloria and Desmond are both in their sixties and he was married for thirty-one years before his wife died, so her vows have to honor that once and then be about the two of them

Said by Gloria, to Desmond. The names are made up.

The vows

Desmond, we met over a fence at the Linden Avenue community garden, plots fourteen and fifteen. You grew far too many tomatoes and kept leaving them on my bench with no note. It took me most of a summer to work out who was doing it.

We're both sixty-six. Neither of us saw this coming. I'd made my peace with a quiet life, and I liked it. Then you started bringing two folding chairs instead of one.

You loved Ellen for thirty-one years, and I'd never ask you to set that down. I'm grateful to her for the man I get to marry.

My promises are small ones, mostly. I'll do the Sunday crossword with you in pen, the way you insist, and I'll stop pretending I know the opera clues. I'll keep the kettle on the left burner, where you like it. I'll go to every one of Josie's swim meets and bring the good cushions for the bleachers. When I'm worried, I'll tell you, instead of being brave about it.

We don't have as many years ahead as some people here today. I'd still rather have ours than anybody else's.

So keep bringing the chairs. I'll be there every Saturday, for as long as we get.

Why it works: The late wife gets one sentence of real gratitude, placed early, and then the vows move on, which is the respectful way to do it. The garden details make a late-life romance feel lived in. The ending is honest about time without dwelling on it, and the folding chairs come back as the promise.

Make them yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. These open on one real moment, say one thing about the partner nobody else sees, make a handful of promises (mostly small ones), and come back to the opening detail at the end. Put your own moment, your own habit and your own promises in each slot. The guide to writing vows walks through each part.

Write yours, or check them

The vow writer starts from your own answers. The vows check times your draft and flags the lines every couple uses, without sending it anywhere.
