Funny Wedding Vows for Her (2 Minutes)

A groom marrying a woman who can't throw anything away wants vows that tease her sentimental streak in front of her family and then show he understands it

Said by Fintan, to Matilde. The names are made up.

The vows

Matilde, there is a drawer in our kitchen that holds forty-one keys. I counted them on Sunday. None of them open anything we own. When I suggested we throw a few out, you held up a little brass one and said, "What if that's the key to something?" It isn't. It's from a bike lock you lost in 2019.

You keep things. Ticket stubs, twist ties, a rubber band from the night we met, which I only know about because you mentioned it on our third date and I acted like that was normal.

So here's what I can offer.

I promise never to touch the key drawer without a witness. I'll stop calling your car "the snack bin," at least in front of your mother. I will learn the song you sing when you can't find your phone, the one that's just the word "phone" over and over, and I'll sing the harmony.

I'm going to keep losing to you at Scrabble, mostly because you're better, partly because you play words I'm fairly sure are Welsh.

And when you're cold, which is always, you get the good side of the blanket without having to ask.

Okay. One real thing. When I moved in, you didn't clear a shelf for me. You cleared half the drawer. You took twenty keys out of there, Matilde. I know what that cost you.

So I'm giving you one more. This one opens something.

It's ours, and I already know you'll never throw it out.

Why it works: Every joke comes from one habit of hers, so the teasing has a center and never turns mean. The turn is the moment she cleared half the drawer for him, which recasts the joke as proof of how much she gave up. The last line hands her a new key, so the habit he spent two minutes mocking becomes the promise.

Make them yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. These open on one real moment, say one thing about the partner nobody else sees, make a handful of promises (mostly small ones), and come back to the opening detail at the end. Put your own moment, your own habit and your own promises in each slot. The guide to writing vows walks through each part.

Write yours, or check them

The vow writer starts from your own answers. The vows check times your draft and flags the lines every couple uses, without sending it anywhere.
