Wedding Toast from a Last-Minute Plus-One (Short, 90 Seconds)
A plus-one at a twenty-two person wedding is asked to say a few words with no notice, having met the couple three times
Given by Eulalia, a guest's plus-one, for Iolanthe and Marisela. The names are made up.
The speech
Hi. I'm Eulalia. I am here as the date of Iolanthe's cousin, which means I have met the two of you a total of three times, one of which was an hour ago in the parking lot, and now I have a microphone. I want to be honest about that. I cannot tell you a childhood story. There are twenty-two people here and twenty of them can.
What I can tell you is what I saw at four o'clock this afternoon.
The wind came off the lake right as Marisela got to the second page of her vows, and the page went with it. Into the water. Gone. Marisela stood there for a second and said, "I don't remember the rest." And Iolanthe said, "I do." Which was early, technically, but the officiant let it go.
I don't know either of you well. But I know that one of you lost her words in front of everyone she loves, and the other one did not let her stand there alone for even a second. I have friends of ten years who would not have been that fast.
Please raise a glass. To Iolanthe and Marisela. The page is in the lake, and nobody needed it.
Why it works: It does not pretend to know the couple. It admits the gap in the first breath, then spends every remaining second on one thing the speaker actually witnessed that afternoon, which is more than most prepared speeches manage.
Make It Yours
Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The short wedding toasts walks through each part.
