Wedding speech examples for stepparents and blended families
A stepparent's speech has to honor a family that existed before them, and a speech at a second wedding has to make room for children who didn't choose any of this. These full speeches do both.
Acknowledge the other parent
If the bride or groom's other parent is in the room, a short, warm thank-you to them settles everyone.
Admit it wasn't instant
A blended family that says it was easy from day one isn't believed. One honest line about the awkward start makes the rest land.
Include the kids
If there are children from earlier marriages, speak to them directly, by name, for a sentence or two.

- Friend or guest · Heartfelt · about 3 minutesGroom's Second Wedding Speech, With His KidsA groom marrying for the second time speaks with his two children from his first marriage standing in the wedding party, and addresses each by name“Thank you all for being here. I'm Hieronymus, and I'm the groom, which I was told I would get to say exactly once tonight, so I am saying it now. Most of you know this is not my first time standing at one of these.”
- Friend or guest · Heartfelt · about 3 minutesToast for a Parent's Second Marriage, From Their DaughterAn adult daughter toasts her divorced mom's second marriage, welcoming her new stepdad at the reception“Hi, everyone. I'm Coral, Aurelia's daughter. My brother Marlon is the one at table four pretending he isn't already crying. He asked me to do this, which was smart of him. My parents split up when I was nine and Marlon was six.”
- Father of the Bride · Heartfelt · about 3.5 minutesStepfather of the Bride SpeechA stepfather who arrived when the bride was fourteen and wasn't wanted speaks with her father in the room, and has to honor both men without making it awkward“Hi, everyone. I'm Magnus. I'm Frida's stepfather, and for about a year of her life I was "Mom's husband," said in a tone I won't try to imitate in front of her new in-laws. I married Ulla when Frida was fourteen. Frida did not ask for me.”
