Best Man Speech for a Best Friend (Heartfelt, 3.5 Minutes)

Best friends since their early twenties; the groom showed up uninvited when the best man's father had a stroke

Given by Lyle, the best man, for Osman and Delia. The names are made up.

The speech

Hi, everyone. I'm Lyle. Osman and I met when we were twenty-two, in the back room of a bike shop, arguing about whether you can patch a flat with a dollar bill. You can. He still says you can't.

That was eleven years ago. I could tell you a lot of stories about this man, and a few of them are even fit for his grandmother's table. But there's really only one I want to tell.

Five years ago, in March, my dad had a stroke. I got the call on a Tuesday night and drove six hours to a hospital in Dayton, and I didn't tell anybody. I'm not proud of that. I just didn't know how to say it out loud yet.

Around two in the morning I was sitting in the waiting room on the fourth floor, phone at three percent, and Osman walked in. He'd gotten it out of my sister. He had a duffel bag, a phone charger, and a foil tray of his mother's börek that she'd made at midnight when he told her where he was going. He sat down next to me and said, "Okay. What are the nurses' names?"

He stayed four days. He slept in a chair that did not recline. He learned every nurse on that floor by name, and which one would bring an extra blanket. Every morning he bought my dad a crossword book from the gift shop, even though my dad couldn't hold a pen yet, and filled it in out loud. He got most of them wrong on purpose so my dad would have something to correct.

My dad is sitting at table six tonight. He would like everyone to know that he still does the crossword, and he still corrects Osman.

So that's who I thought my best friend was. The guy who shows up with the charger. And he is. But until I met Delia, I didn't realize he had never once let anybody show up for him.

Two winters ago Osman had knee surgery, and he told everyone it was nothing. Delia did not believe him. I came by the second night and found her on the living room floor, building a ramp out of plywood so he could get his walker over the step into the kitchen. She'd watched a video. She had a pencil behind her ear. And Osman was on the couch, letting her do it. For once he wasn't trying to help. He was just watching her like he couldn't quite believe his luck.

Delia, I've watched him take care of everyone he loves for eleven years. Thank you for being the one who takes care of him. And for knowing when he's lying about his knee.

Will everyone raise a glass, please. To Osman and Delia, and to the people who bring the charger.

Why it works: The hospital story proves who the groom is without a single adjective, and the turn to Delia shows the one thing the speaker never saw before: someone looking after him.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The how to write a best man speech walks through each part.
