Thanksgiving Toast at a Partner's Family Dinner (1 Minute)

A guest at his partner's family Thanksgiving for the first time, asked on the spot by his partner's mother to say something, who wanted to thank them without overdoing it.

Given by Ahmed, at his partner's family Thanksgiving for the first time. 141 words. The names are made up.

The toast

Brandt told me I wouldn't have to say anything tonight, so of course his mom asked me to.

I've been worrying about this dinner since about August. I didn't know where to sit, what to bring, or whether this was a football family or a parade family. Then I walked in, and there was a place card with my name on it. Brandt's little sister did all of them by hand. Mine was the only name she had to ask how to spell, and she got it right on the first try. She also drew a small turkey next to it, which I'm keeping.

Thank you for having me, for the seat, and for not asking me a single hard question before dinner. I'm told those come with pie.

Raise your glass, everyone. To this family, and to the place cards.

Why it works: He admits he was worried, which the whole table already knew, then names the one small thing that made him feel welcome. Thanking a family through the kid who made the place cards is warmer than thanking them in general.
