Swedish Wedding Toasts: Cheers, Speeches, and Customs

Speeches are the main course, and a toastmaster keeps order.

To the couple

Ett fyrfaldigt leve för brudparet!

et FEER-fal-dikt LAY-veh fur BROOD-pah-ret · A fourfold cheer for the bridal couple, followed by 'hurra' four times

Who speaks, and when

  • A toastmaster, or toastmadame, runs the dinner. Anyone who wants to speak signs up in advance and gets a slot.
  • Parents usually open. The best man and maid of honor speak. Then friends, siblings, colleagues, sometimes a dozen in all.
  • Songs written to a familiar tune, with lyrics about the couple, are handed out on the tables and sung by everyone between speeches.

How long

Three to five minutes, and the toastmaster will say. With a long list, the dinner can run five hours. The Swedish rule of thumb is that a speech is a gift, and a gift should not take all evening to unwrap.

What you’ll see

  • 'Ett fyrfaldigt leve' is the Swedish cheer: 'hurra, hurra, hurra, hurra,' four times, led by whoever is speaking.
  • Skål has a small ritual: raise the glass, meet eyes with the people near you, drink, meet eyes again, lower the glass.
  • Printed song sheets on the tables. Expect to sing to the tune of something you know with words you do not.
  • The couple often walks into the ceremony together, side by side, rather than the bride being walked in by her father.
  • A midnight snack, often sausages or a small buffet, appears late to keep the party going.

If you’re the guest from somewhere else

  • Sign up with the toastmaster before the day. Spontaneous speeches are not done.
  • Keep eye contact when you skål. It is the part of the ritual Swedes notice.
  • A speech in English is fine. Most of the room will follow it. End on 'skål' and the fourfold hurra.

A toast you could give

Short, warm, specific to the couple, and ending on the phrase. Swap in your own names and your own detail; the shape is what matters.

Elin is the only person I know who answers an email before I have finished writing it. Oskar, you will never wait for anything again. To Elin and Oskar. Skål, and ett fyrfaldigt leve!

Speaking at a Swedish wedding?

Whatever the tradition, the speech that lands has the same bones: one story, a turn, a word to the partner, a toast. The guides have it for every role, and the free check reads your draft and tells you how it lands.
