Groom Speech With a Toast to the Guests (Heartfelt, About 3 Minutes)

The groom speaks alone, thanks both families, and ends by toasting the guests instead of the couple.

Given by Horatio, the groom, for Horatio and Mireya. The names are made up.

The speech

Good evening. I'm Horatio, and as of about four o'clock this afternoon I'm Mireya's husband, which I have practiced in the mirror and still can't say without grinning.

Thank you all for being here. To my parents, Evander and Philippa, thank you for the specific everything: the store, the Saturdays, the plate that was always kept warm. To Nikolaj and Katarina, thank you for Mireya, and for the first dinner at your house, when Nikolaj handed me the carving knife and did not watch to see if I'd mess it up. To Leander, Cosima, and the wedding party, thank you for months of work and for never once letting us see the spreadsheet.

I want to tell you one thing Mireya did. Not what she is. Everyone here knows what she is.

Two Januaries ago, my dad's store did its yearly inventory. If you've never done one, it's a week of standing in a cold aisle counting hinges. Dad was down to me and a kid from the high school. Mireya and I had been together about eight months. She had been in the store maybe twice. On the Monday, at six in the morning, she walked in with a box of coffee, took a clipboard off the hook, and asked my dad where he wanted her.

She counted for nine hours. She found a box of three-eighths carriage bolts that had been miscounted for three straight years, which my father still brings up more often than our engagement. She came back Tuesday. She came back Wednesday. She never told me she was doing it. I found out because Dad called and said, "Your girl's here," in the voice he uses when something has impressed him and he doesn't want to make a thing of it.

I asked her later why. She said, "Your dad sounded tired on the phone." She hadn't been on the phone. She'd been in the next room.

That's the thing she did, and it's the thing she keeps doing. She hears what people don't say, and then she shows up at six with coffee.

Mireya. You walked into a cold hardware store in January because you could tell somebody needed a hand, and you've been doing some version of that for me every day since. I'm going to spend a long time trying to deserve it.

The toast tonight isn't for us. Everybody, glasses up. To all of you, from Mireya and Horatio. Thank you for getting us here.

Why it works: The one story is about something she did, not a list of what she is, and the toast turns outward to the room, which is what a groom speech is for.

Make It Yours

Borrow the shape, not the sentences. This one is built on a single story that only its speaker could tell, and the room can hear a borrowed story from the back. Keep the order of the parts, the length, and the way it turns from the story to the partner, and put your own detail in each slot. The groom and couple speech guide walks through each part.
